First Time Home Buyers – Choosing An Agent
This is the second blog in my First Time Home Buyers series. Check out my first post, First Time Home Buyers – Pre-Approval. The professionals you work with has a direct effect on how smoothly your real estate transaction will go. Usually, the first professional that you make contact with will be a real estate agent. Here are some tips for choosing an agent!
Every REALTOR is an agent, but not every agent is a REALTOR. A REALTOR is an agent who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS and their local REALTOR association. These agents are held to a higher standard, the REALTOR Code of Ethics and have regular ethics training.Don’t you want an agent who makes ethics a priority?
You know that long time agent in your area? He’s been at it for years. He knows EVERYONE.EVERYONE knows him.Yeah, that person. They may or may not be the best fit for you. Many years in the industry doesn’t mean that that agent will necessarily work hard for you.Sometimes experience turns into complacency or sometimes agents have been around for a while for they are working hard at what they do.New agents could be an excellent option if they have a good support system at their firm because they will have more time to devote to your home search or sale. Then there are some new agents who look at their new career as a hobby and likely will not be on top of their game. The short and sweet is, look at the agent’s personality, work ethic, and communication before you sign that agreement.
Personal references or testimonials are the best way to get a real idea of an agent’s style and work habits.Talk to friends or family who have similar needs and personalities as your own and who have recently sold or purchased a home.Check out the agent’s website or Facebook page for testimonials or reviews.Personally ask for references from the agent. No matter how you go about it, do your homework.
